God has not chosen to reveal Himself in a variety of ways but through the uniqueness of Christ. Christ, also called the “Son of God” or the “Word,” was with the Father from the beginning. Christ was not a creation of God, but emanated from the depth of God before time began. Christ has always been with the Father, in the beginning, before the world was created. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) Christ is of the same nature and substance as the Father and is of one heart and mind with the Father; they are in perfect unity and agreement. Christ said, “I and my Father are one.” (John 10:30) Christ only does what He sees the Father doing (John 5:19), and only does what is pleasing to the Father (John 8:21).
Christ’s purpose is to reveal God – to make God known. “He is the image of the invisible God.” (Colossians 1:15) “He reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of His Nature.” (Hebrews 1:3) If Christ’s purpose is to reveal God to all of creation, and if Christ was with the Father from the beginning, then can know that it was in the heart of God to reveal Himself to creation from the beginning – even before the was a creation! God did not create the heavens and the earth on a whim. Before there was time, it was in God’s heart to create all things and to reveal Himself to all things. It was God’s plan to know and be known – especially by human beings who were created in God’s love and with whom He desired to share Himself in loving relationship.
“Through Him (The Word) all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.” (John 1:3) If Christ reveals God, and all of creation was made through Christ, then we can know that creation itself reveals the nature of God. “The heavens declare the glory of God and the skies proclaim the work of is hands.” (Psalm 19:1) We can see the stamp of God in all of creation, especially in men and women who were created in God’s image. (Genesis 1:27)
Christ’s revealing of God is full and complete. It is not a partial revelation or some kind of counterfeit replica. God has not withheld or hidden any of Himself but has revealed Himself fully in Christ. “In Him (Christ) all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” (Colossians 1:19) “No one has seen God at any time; the Only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known.” (John 1:18)
And so it was at just the right time, in the fullness of time, this eternal Christ became a human being. It is the most poignant moment in all of human history. The one unique full revelation of God stepped down from His own place of majesty and entered fully into the human condition – becoming one of us. His name was Jesus. He was born of the lineage of David, King of Israel. He was born in Bethlehem, born of Jewish decent, born among the poor. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld His glory, the glory of the only begotten Son of the Father.” (John 1:14)
There are not a variety of ways through which God has made Himself known, there is one way: Christ. Christ, the eternal Word of God, the One through which all things were created, He alone reveals God. We are not left to guesswork. We do not have to stumble about in darkness and mystery frantically wondering who God is and hoping we can find some way to know the Creator. We can see God fully in the face of Christ. As Jesus Himself said, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.” (John 14:9)
