“No one can receive anything except that which is given from heaven.” ~John 3:27
An important part of wisdom is learning to recognize what is from God and what is not, and then learning to patiently function in that which God provides. Too many people are confused in this area, as they are confused about hearing from God generally. They are unable to sort out what is from God and what is not. Like most everything else, such understanding is learned. We learn to hear the Master’s voice. We make mistakes along the way, but we learn from it and get better at discerning His voice. We do not remain as children stumbling about in the darkness hoping for lucky guesses.
The biggest mistake is trying to force something and not waiting on God. If God does not open the door, do not proceed. If God does not open the door, patiently wait for Him. Being anxious only makes things worse and will only prompt you to try to force something prior to the time. Jesus had a sense of timing; He would watch, pray, wait and listen. Then He would move as He saw His Father move. This is the mark of all great spiritual leaders. Even a godly enterprise embarked upon out of its proper time can only wreak havoc. Saul would not wait on Samuel and offered the sacrifice prematurely and was out of order when he did it. (1 Samuel 13:8-9)
This is not to say that we are fatalistic as we sit on our hands and say, “what will be will be.” On the contrary, we ask, seek, and knock. We pray without ceasing. We can open heaven’s doors and sway the heart of God. But we can only function in that which is given from heaven. If we have favor, then we operate in favor. If we do not have favor, we accept it rather than trying to manufacture it artificially. If God provides, then we have it and if He does not, we work with what He does provide.
Work with what you have, not what you don’t have. There is nothing wrong with dreaming dreams and envisioning more than you have. But learn to distinguish between daydreams that arise out of your carnal lust and visions from God which constitute the prophetic prelude to His mighty acts. Believe great things. We serve a mighty God. Dream dreams and open your heart to visions. But do not try to take those visions and concoct something on your own. God will do it in His time as you are faithful day-by-day in what He provides.
